Non-Native Indigenous Art—Gallery of David B. Wilcoxen

David B. Wilcoxen:
Artist’s Statement

Maintaining balance in my life is important. As such, I believe one’s life should possess both an Industry and an Art. I have an industry to make a worthwhile living, and I have art to make living worthwhile.

As an environmental attorney, my industry provides a reasonably comfortable living. But it is the presence of art in my life and the world that provides understanding and hope. I strive to live and see the art in everyday life, whether it’s spreading jelly on a slice of toast or watching the synchronized movements of birds in flight.

I believe art, in all manifestations, contains a universal language that speaks to everyone if we open our hearts and minds. The universal, primal language in art is what fascinates me most. Accordingly, I endeavor to create works that would be as easily understood by cave dwellers, as they would be to those living in high-rise condominiums.

For many years, I avoided the desire to create. With time, however, I have come to appreciate the value and necessity of art in one’s life. For me, it is moving through life in an artful manner that makes living worthwhile.

Thank you.
